Sunday + depression = sundaypression – a term I have coined to describe the ominous feeling of dread on the evening prior to yet another long, torturous week, after but 2 days off out of 7. Friday and Saturday night were great, but now it’s over. It’s Sunday, and you know that you’re gonna have to get an early night in order to survive the work day tomorrow. Unless you do not work, there is no choice but to make the best of the situation at hand, which is why I have compiled a list of ways to ease the nasty effects of Sundaypression.
The most important thing, and probably the most obvious, is to give yourself something to look forward to, both on a Sunday and a Monday. This way, instead of zombie-ing along in painful dread, you can actually get a little bit excited for these days. For example; plan a session of paintballing, a brunch with all your closest friends, see the latest film out, whatever tickles your fancy. The same goes for a Monday. Plan something exciting for a Monday night – a dance class, a movie – something that will keep you going throughout the course of Monday.
Albeit difficult for the rampant alcoholics out there (me included, a little bit…) it is vital to not get ass-faced on a Saturday night. Hanging like an old woman’s sagging boobs will only make your Sunday even worse than it already is, and make you more aware of the fact that Monday is coming. Slowly and painfully like pulling a tooth out without anesthetic. Ouch.
Get completely wasted out of your skull on Friday night (Don’t get me wrong, I am not endorsing alcoholism…that much) but if you really really want to, or simply have to, do it on Friday. Recover on Saturday, relax, get some sleep, and have a chilled yet still enjoyable night on Saturday. Wake up AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE on Sunday. Nothing is worse than waking up on a Sunday afternoon only to realize how many hours of consciousness you have wasted that could have been spent appreciating your last day off of the weekend. Try to wake up early and appreciate the day, fill it up with exciting things, and I can guarantee you will feel better.
Arriving at work to a plain old desk supporting nothing but a computer and a pile of dust, is the epitome of uninspiring, a great cause for depression. You can find my work desk covered in flowers, pictures, fancy pens and pencils, ornaments, creams and more – things from home that make my desk more cozy and homely. Unfortunate as it is, we have to spend a large percentage of our lives behind these desks (unless you are a millionaire or don’t have to work or own your own business) so the only thing you can do is make this space of yours as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Arriving at a desk that is “you” will definitely be a little more inspiring than the thought of going to work to find one dusty computer, and perhaps a chewed up pen laying next to it. Studies have also shown that having a plant on your desk can greatly improve positivity and work flow.
On a Sunday morning, always eat a large, hearty brekkie. Eggs are best, as they are packed with protein and goodness. Gotta fill up with those liquid chickens. Having a healthy hearty breakfast with give you the sufficient energy required to make it through the day with positivity and power. Do it. The same goes for a Monday morning. Also, make sure you do something interesting before work on Monday morning– whether it be hitting the gym, going for a sexy cappuccino, or even a cheeky full breakfast at wimpy, anything that will reinforce in your mind the fact the you do in fact have a life outside the corporate prison you sit locked in every day.
Also, take lunch. Take it. I can’t stress this enough. Don’t eat at your desk, it’s very bad to work without break. It is cause for depression, anxiety and depression. And depression. (Like I said – can’t stress this enough) Unless you literally have so much work to do you cannot leave, leave. You are entitled to a lunch hour. Having this to look forward to will make things a little more bearable. If you have to spend your lunch hour at work, tell your boss you are leaving an hour early or are going to take an extra hour the next day. It is your right – never forget it.
I like to set out my outfit, with matching shoes and jewelry, out on a Sunday night, ready for a Monday morning. Not only does this mean you can sleep in for an extra ten minutes (instead of standing in front of your cupboard drooling like a confused dog in the morning) but you will feel confident, organized and unrushed, AND you can look forward to looking like a superstar within the depths of your spectacularly planned outfit. Winning. Doing things the night before will make you feel better, even packing a lunch. Monday morning rush and stress is one of the biggest parts of the Sundaypression. Ease this by taking my advice.
As you can see, not all hope is lost with Sundaypression. There are many things you can do to ease the suckiness, but these things can only be done through positivity and looking at the bright side of life (ranting-sugar-coated-morals-time) so first get into that mindset, and then perform the above guidelines, and start to enjoy your life, even on the treacherous evening that is Sunday.
